We’re all familiar with the following verse from John:
For God so loved the world, that He gave His only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life.
What exactly is this everlasting life?
If you were to ask a believer “what is eternal life?” more than likely the answer you’d get would be ‘living forever’. As I mentioned yesterday, we’re all created-eternal-spirit-beings and as such we all live forever, either in the presence of God or outside of His presence.
I assure you, most solemnly I tell you, the person whose ears are open to My words [who listens to My message] and believes and trusts in and clings to and relies on Him Who sent Me has (possesses now) eternal life. John 5:24
Did you see that? Eternal life is a present-tense possession. Eternal life is right NOW. You possess it in this life and do not have to wait for the after-life.
Okay, Eternal life is now, but what exactly is it?
Jesus himself gives us the answer here in John 17. Read from verse 1.
And this is life eternal, that they might know thee the only true God, and Jesus Christ, whom thou hast sent. John 17:3
The wisdom of God is overwhelmingly amazing in its simplicity here. Eternal life is knowing God and Jesus Christ well. How do we know God and Jesus well?
Knowing God and His Son well is having an intimate knowledge of and a close personal relationship with the Father and His Son. This is what we were created for – relationship with the Father. This has not changed. As I mentioned yesterday, Jesus’ death and resurrection made it possible for our relationship with the Father to be restored. So friend, take advantage of this great sacrifice. Get to know the Father and His beloved Son. Establish a close, intimate and personal relationship with them today.
O just and righteous Father, although the world has not known You and has failed to recognize You and has never acknowledged You, I have known You [continually]; and these men understand and know that You have sent Me. I have made Your Name known to them and revealed Your character and Your very Self, and I will continue to make [You] known, that the love which You have bestowed upon Me may be in them [felt in their hearts] and that I [Myself] may be in them.
